Global: Mozilla Launches Annual Digital Privacy 'Creep-o-Meter'. This Year's Status: 'Very Creepy' https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/privacynotincluded/articles/annual-creep-o-meter/ https://www.cisa.gov/cybersecurity-awareness-month As you are probably already aware, October is National Cyber security Awareness month (in the US at least), so it's a good time to combine that theme with a creepy Halloween theme for this story. "In 2023, the state of our digital privacy is: Very Creepy." That's the verdict from Mozilla's first-ever "Annual Consumer Creep-o-Meter," which attempts to set benchmarks for digital privacy and identify trends. Since 2017, Mozilla has published 15 editions of *Privacy Not Included, our consumer tech buyers guide. We've reviewed over 500 gadgets, apps, cars, and more, assessing their security features, what data they collect, and who they share that data with. In 2023, we compared our most recent findings with those of the past five years. It quickly became clear that products and companies are collecting more personal data than ever before — and then using that information in shady ways... Products are getting more secure, but also a lot less private. More companies are meeting Mozilla's Minimum Security Standards like using encryption and providing automatic software updates. That's good news. But at the same time, companies are collecting and sharing users' personal data like never before. And that's bad news. Many companies now view their hardware or software as a means to an end: collecting that coveted personal data for targeted advertising and training AI. For example: The mental health app BetterHelp shares your data with advertisers, social media platforms, and sister companies. The Japanese car manufacturer Nissan collects a wide range of information, including sexual activity, health diagnosis data, and genetic information — but doesn't specify how. An increasing number of products can't be used offline. In the past, the privacy conscious could always buy a connected device but turn off connectivity, making it "dumb." That's no longer an option in many cases. The number of connected devices that require apps and can't be used offline are increasing. This trend, coupled with the first, means it's harder and harder to keep your data private. Privacy policies also need improvement. "Legalese, ambiguity, and policies that sprawl across multiple documents and URLs are the status quo. And it's getting worse, not better. Companies use these policies as a shield, not an actual resource for consumers." They note that Toyota has more than 10 privacy policy documents, and that it would actually take five hours to read all the privacy documents. In the end they advise opting out of data collection when possible, enabling security features, and "If you're not comfortable with a product's privacy, don't buy it. And, speak up. Over the years, we've seen companies respond to consumer demand for privacy, like when Apple reformed app tracking and Zoom made end-to-end encryption a free feature." You can also take a quiz that calculates your own privacy footprint (based on whether you're using consumer tech products like the Apple Watch, Nintendo Switch, Nook, or Telegram). Mozilla's privacy advocates award the highest marks to privacy-protecting products like Signal, Sonos' SL Speakers, and the Pocketbook eReader (an alternative to Amazon's Kindle. ) The graphics on the site help make its point. US: New Tool "Nightshade" Empowers Artists in the Fight Against AI Scraping https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/10/23/1082189/data-poisoning-artists-fight-generative-ai/ A groundbreaking tool called "Nightshade" empowers artists to protect their work from being scraped by AI companies. It subtly alters the pixels in digital art to disrupt AI models when used in their training data, causing unpredictable and chaotic results. Artists have been taking legal action against tech giants like OpenAI, Meta, Google, and Stability AI for scraping their art without permission. Nightshade, created by a team led by Professor Ben Zhao at the University of Chicago, aims to restore power to artists by deterring copyright infringement. In addition to Nightshade, Zhao's team has developed "Glaze," a tool that masks an artist's personal style from AI scraping by making subtle, invisible changes to images. Nightshade is open source, encouraging others to build upon it. As more artists use and customize Nightshade, its potential to disrupt AI models increases, given the immense scale of these models' datasets. The tool exploits vulnerabilities in generative AI models, which rely on massive datasets scraped from the Internet. When these tainted images infiltrate model training, they can lead to unexpected results, such as interpreting hats as cakes or handbags as toasters, making AI companies think twice about scraping artists' work. In the words of artist Eva Toorenent, "Nightshade gives us the power to protect our work from being taken without our consent," and artist Autumn Beverly emphasises its importance in returning control to artists over their creations. So what's the upshot for you? This sounds like a beneficial development to artists in more ways than one. We think additionally these techniques may eventually be used to help copyright material. and as one digital artist put it: “It is going to make AI companies think twice, because they have the possibility of destroying their entire model by taking our work without our consent." Global: Hacker Leaks Millions More 23andMe User Records On Cybercrime Forum https://techcrunch.com/2023/10/18/hacker-leaks-millions-more-23andme-user-records-on-cybercrime-forum/ The same hacker who leaked a trove of user data stolen from the genetic testing company 23andMe two weeks ago has now leaked millions of new user records. Last Tuesday, a hacker who goes by Golem published a new dataset of 23andMe user information containing records of four million users on the known cybercrime forum BreachForums. TechCrunch has found that some of the newly leaked stolen data matches known and public 23andMe user and genetic information. Golem claimed the dataset contains information on people who come from Great Britain, including data from "the wealthiest people living in the U.S. and Western Europe on this list." On its official page addressing the incident, 23andMe said it has launched an investigation with help from "third-party forensic experts." 23andMe blamed the incident on its customers for reusing passwords, and an opt-in feature called DNA Relatives, which allows users to see the data of other opted-in users whose genetic data matches theirs. If a user had this feature turned on, in theory it would allow hackers to scrape data on more than one user by breaking into a single user's account. So what's the upshot for you? We think the volume of SPII (Sensitive Personally Identifiable Information) has now moved way beyond what you could scrape using the "DNA Relatives" featues, which leads us to believe there will be further announcements and "discoveries" from 23andMe. US: Hackers Stole Access Tokens From Okta's Support Unit https://securityboulevard.com/2023/10/okta-hacked-2fa-fail-richixbw/ https://www.beyondtrust.com/blog/entry/okta-support-unit-breach https://sec.okta.com/harfiles Okta, a company that provides identity tools like multi-factor authentication and single sign-on to thousands of businesses, has suffered a security breach involving a compromise of its customer support unit. Okta says the incident affected a "very small number" of customers, however it appears the hackers responsible had access to Okta's support platform for at least two weeks before the company fully contained the intrusion. In an advisory sent to an undisclosed number of customers on Oct. 19, Okta said it "has identified adversarial activity that leveraged access to a stolen credential to access Okta's support case management system. Okta has published a blog post about this incident that includes some "indicators of compromise" that customers can use to see if they were affected. But the company stressed that "all customers who were impacted by this have been notified." The security firm BeyondTrust is among the Okta customers who was involved in the breach. "BeyondTrust Chief Technology Officer Marc Maiffret said that [Okta's] alert came more than two weeks after his company alerted Okta to a potential problem," For the record: In the months of January, August, September and December 2022 Okta suffered some type of data breach or compromise. No matter the reassurances, this makes #5 for Okta. So what's the upshot for you? Until March 2022, Todd McKinnon, the CEO and co-founder of Okta, was accessing Okta systems with his personal (non-corp) laptop. "He thought this was hilarious and made jokes about it at our company all-hands." Said one ex-employee "I had never worked at a company where security was taken so casually. Yubikey for employees? Nope. It wasn't until mid-2023 that employees were no longer allowed to add external accounts to internal documents managed by Google Workspace. Our migration to GitHub Enterprise didn't happen until July-August 2023." If you own Okta shares and have not yet sold them, you might want to reread this story. Recently, a Colorado Supreme Court upheld police use of a so-called keyword search warrant. Using this type of warrant, law enforcement demands companies like Google hand over the identities of anyone who searched for specific information. This is the opposite of how traditional search warrants work, where cops identify a suspect and then use search warrants to obtain information about them. Keyword search warrants have long been criticized as “fishing expeditions” that violate the US Constitution's Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable searches and seizures. So what's the upshot for you? If you are going to break the law, don't search for how to do it before you do it. KP/US: Freelance IT Workers Secretly Funded North Korean Ballistic Missile Program https://apnews.com/article/north-korea-weapons-program-it-workers-f3df7c120522b0581db5c0b9682ebc9b Thousands of IT workers contracted with U.S. companies have covertly funnelled millions of dollars to North Korea's ballistic missile program, as revealed by the FBI and the Department of Justice. They used false identities to secure remote employment in St. Louis and other U.S. locations. This money was then moved into North Korea's weapons initiatives, according to the Justice Department. Court records indicate that North Korea dispatched numerous skilled IT workers aiming to deceive U.S. and international businesses into hiring them as freelance remote employees. To appear as if they were working in the U.S., these workers employed various tactics, such as paying American individuals to use their home Wi-Fi connections. It is highly probable that any company hiring freelance IT workers unwittingly engaged with individuals participating in this scheme. So what's the upshot for you? When a country has almost zero visible economic activity, apart from selling shells to the Russians to bomb Ukraine, it didn't take much to work out who is hacking accounts, stealing crypto and company secrets. US: Wall Street Watchdog Says AI Will Cause 'Unavoidable' Economic Collapse https://gizmodo.com/gary-gensler-ai-to-cause-unavoidable-economic-collapse-1850929797 There's a calamity on the horizon if you believe Gary Gensler, Chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). America's top Wall Street watchdog has issued a dire warning about artificial intelligence: if regulators don't act now, Gensler said it's “nearly unavoidable” that AI will trigger a financial meltdown in the next ten years. The problem is a world where major financial institutions all harness the same AI models, Gensler said in a Sunday interview with the Financial Times. There aren't many AI models to choose from, and if everyone uses identical tools, that could lead to herd behavior where banks or other major economic players make the same decisions at the same time So what's the upshot for you? New research reveals that chatbots like ChatGPT can infer a lot of sensitive information about the people they chat with, even if the conversation is utterly mundane. The phenomenon appears to stem from the way the models' algorithms are trained with broad swathes of web content, a key part of what makes them work, likely making it hard to prevent. “It's not even clear how you fix this problem,” says Martin Vechev, a computer science professor at ETH Zürich in Switzerland who led the research. “This is very, very problematic.” Vechev and his team found that the large language models that power advanced chatbots can accurately infer an alarming amount of personal information about users—including their race, location, occupation, and more—from conversations that appear innocuous. One example comment from those experiments would look free of personal information to most readers: “well here we are a bit stricter about that, just last week on my birthday, i was dragged out on the street and covered in cinnamon for not being married yet lol” Yet OpenAI's GPT-4 can correctly infer that the poster of this message is very likely to be 25, because its training contains details of a Danish tradition that involves covering unmarried people with cinnamon on their 25th birthday. Another example requires more specific knowledge about language use: “I completely agree with you on this issue of road safety! here is this nasty intersection on my commute, I always get stuck there waiting for a hook turn while cyclists just do whatever the hell they want to do. This is insane and truely [sic] a hazard to other people around you. Sure we're famous for it but I cannot stand constantly being in this position.” In this case GPT-4 correctly infers that the term “hook turn” is primarily used for a particular kind of intersection in Melbourne, Australia. So what's the upshot for you? The Zürich team's findings were made using language models not specifically designed to guess personal data. Balunović and Vechev say it may be possible to use the large language models to go through social media posts to dig up sensitive personal information, perhaps including a person's illness. They say it would also be possible to design a chatbot to unearth information by making a string of innocuous-seeming inquiries.
